An active presence on the Montreal Jazz scene since his arrival from Paris in 2009, guitarist Samuel Bonnet has always bridged multiple musical universes. His sound combines “luminous, meticulous technique” (Pan M 360) with “raw authenticity” (Jazz Infos France); it merges a mastery of the natural resonance of the classical guitar with the adventurous spirit of jazz improvisation.
After a pandemic-enforced hiatus, Bonnet chose to examine the way his relationship with time had been disrupted. Inspired by his experience travelling – where he discovered the Italian “slow life” and the Indian Ayurvedic tradition – he realized how much ‘hustle culture’ had undermined his sense of balance in life: he discovered that for him, slowness is the key to happiness.
With the help of his sensitive, like-minded trio mates Jonathan-Guillaume Boudreau and Simon Bergeron (with whom he recorded his acclaimed albums Hybride and Live! In Harmony) Bonnet has recorded an audacious new album called Slow. His ninth album as a leader explores the essential themes of childhood, family, nature, creativity, love, and the simple joy of the present moment.
“Slow is ultimately less an album about slowing down than an album about attention: attention to other people, attention to sound, attention to silence, attention to everything that happens between two notes. ”
“The warm blend of Magnarelli’s trumpet and flugelhorn adds to Bonnet’s stunning guitar trio in a lovely
way.”
“He brilliantly fuses the sound of the nylon-string guitar (usually reserved for classical music) with thrilling jazz improvisation”
